Soul Clap, No Regular Play, John Camp - Weekend at Barnies

In 2017, Crew Love collective members and dear friends Soul Clap, No Regular Play and John Camp came together to make some music. The goal was to find a sonic common denominator and infuse that with musical love and the joy of friendship. The result was named “Weekend at Barnies”, a title that made everyone laugh and seemed to sum up the vibe and energy of the recording session! This project was originally pressed as a limited edition vinyl only release on the mysterious and ironic “Missed Connections” imprint, but now for the first time, Soul Clap Records is excited to offer this uniquely musical intersection between jazz and dance music along with new remix versions from the mighty Martin Buttrich and a totally unheard cut “Scorpius Maximus”

The title track features Charles Levine’s soulful croons and spoken word by Greg Paulus, replete with fat, gurgling basslines and John Camp’s dark sweeping synth pads. Paulus’ muted trumpet lines surface from the abyss here and evoke Miles Davis’ electric period. The instrumental dub version will take you 20,000 leagues under the sea with its suspenseful layering of these maritime sounds.

“Scorpius Maximus” is a percolating and hypnotic jazz house/techno fusion. Sparkly adornments from keyboardist John Camp, pleading vocals from Charlie, and more left field trumpet solos from Greg Paulus unfold during “Scorpius’” 8 minute evolution that will evoke a dream-like state for its listeners.

“Great Northern”, first generated by Greg and Charlie above the original Marcy Hotel, has been a favorite in Soul Clap DJ sets across the years; it is a triumphant and uplifting trumpet led house instrumental built around soaring arpeggios and rising chords. This cinematic cut is perfect for sunsets, sunrise or anytime one wants to bring a natural and optimistic mood to the dancefloor. “Great Northern” is both simple and yet complex: the beat is for the dancers, its ascending melodic progression is for the lovers, while those components continue to layer on top of each other in intricate and dynamic ways as the track builds.

For this 2025 release, Grammy nominated producer and wizards of House and Techno Martin Buttrich reworks both “Scorpius Maximus” and “Weekend at Barnies” adding girth and an emphasis on the tribal rhythms behind these two tracks.
