Cidadão Instigado - Cidadão Instigado (album sampler)
Ten years after his last release, the acclaimed 'Fortaleza', Fernando Catatau returns with 'Cidadão Instigado', a self-titled album that marks both the 30th anniversary of the project and the beginning of an entirely new creative phase, conceived and led by Catatau alone. The record is out now through the RISCO label in partnership with Nublu Records, with vinyl arriving at the end of September.
Born from pandemic isolation in São Paulo, armed with a Roland MV-8800 sampler, Catatau created beats for unconventional dancers while navigating the mental conflicts of the period. The result engages fearlessly with contemporary Brazilian urban life, blending lo-fi electronics, glitchy digital noise, and vocals evoking concrete and dance floors, always in tension with natural elements: moon, clouds, sea, space.
"Sangue no Chão" opens the album with Juçara Marçal in a tribal, martial collaboration. Forged in both traditional Brazilian music and post-punk, the track howls with banshee intensity while rock appears implicitly in gesture and guitar, the soundscape pointing toward strange, unclassifiable territories.
"Medo do Invisível" features Kiko Dinucci in an atmosphere reminiscent of The Cure's Disintegration, a kind of pagan gospel. Light becomes both attraction and threat, the condition of moths ready to burn or attract predators in the dark forest.
"Nuvem Movimento" (with Jadsa and Anna Vis) captures time's slow scent in a hypnotic meditation on clouds, movement, and the interplay between filled space and emptiness, embodying the album's sensitivity to natural elements.
"Consciência" functions as insight wrapped in fluid identity. The music places us in a common context, perhaps in a favela gathering, where the lyrical voice reveals that all passion and love stories are inventions, but no less real for that reason. It's the moment when movement becomes reflection without the body losing its desire to dance.
The album brings together a constellation of artists that spans generations and scenes. Among the featured voices and musicians: Juçara Marçal, Mateus Fazeno Rock, Jadsa, Ava Rocha, Yma, Kiko Dinucci, Edson Van Gogh, and Anna Vis, alongside long-standing collaborators Régis Damasceno, Dustan Gallas, Clayton Martin, and Rian Batista. Each was chosen because they speak directly to Catatau's creative world, participants in the process, not additions to it.
