Cheptegei is the new single by British keyboard player and producer Sebastian Reynolds due for release on 22nd April 2022. Cheptegei is taken from the new release Athletics EP due on 20th May via producer Capitol K’s label Faith & Industry. Athletics EP follows the previous Sebastian Reynolds EPs Crows (August 2021) and Nihilism is Pointless (January 2021).

A life-long lover of athletics and keen amateur middle-distance runner it was only a matter of time before Sebastian’s great passion came to directly inspire his creative output. Cheptegei was inspired by the superstar Ugandan runner Joshua Cheptegei’s record-breaking 5000M run in Monaco in August 2020. A fittingly jubilant affair featuring joyous saxophones from acclaimed reeds man Peter Fraser as well as guitar and bass from Jody Prewett and percussion and synths from drummer and producer Greig Stewart (ex-Guillemots). The track builds around the narrative laid out by the commentary of running legends Tim Hutchings and Steve Cram. When asked about what inspired him to create the track Sebastian explains, “what I found so inspiring was the sheer shock and awe of Cheptegei performing such an incredible feat with no pre-warning or fanfare, a truly exceptional moment in the history of athletics, and one worth commemorating in song. The tone of surprise and disbelief in the commentators’ voices says it all!”.

Previous Sebastian Reynolds releases include the collaborative records with Anne Müller (Erased Tapes) and Alex Stolze (Bodi Bill), Solo Collective Part 1, released via Nonostar Records in November 2017 and Solo Collective Part 2, released via Nonostar in June 2019. projects have had glowing critical acclaim from across the media and received airtime across the BBC and far beyond. Sebastian continues to work on commissions for Neon Dance, whose work that he scored, Puzzle Creature, has completed two tours to Japan and across the UK.
