Solomun releases his official remix of ‘Notorious Thugs,' The Notorious B.I.G.'s classic collaboration with Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, out now via Warner Music. Official reworks of B.I.G.'s catalogue are rare. The only two prior examples, Razor-N-Go's 1997 club rework of ‘Mo Money Mo Problems’ and Matoma's 2015 tropical house take on ‘Old Thing Back,’ sit at opposite ends of the spectrum from each other, and from where Solomun lands with this one, which makes his inclusion on this very short list all the more notable.

It's not an obvious pairing on paper: Solomun's melodic, house-rooted sound meeting one of hip hop's most iconic records. But it works, largely because hip hop came first for Solomun, who was DJing hip hop and R&B as a teenager, well before he moved into electronic music. It shows how carefully the remix moves around the original vocals rather than over them.
