Eric Demuro - Simulacra

A rhythm-driven, analog-leaning record built from hypnotic basslines, warm synth textures, and layered percussion, “Simulacra” is the debut LP from Venetian bassist and producer Eric Demuro, a fully realized studio statement that brings his compositional voice into focus.

The album moves through hazy jazz-funk, ambient passages, library psychedelia, and Brazilian rhythmic language without settling into revivalism. Fender Rhodes figures, hand percussion, and vintage keyboards drift through spacious arrangements that favor tone and movement over density, creating a sound that feels tactile, patient, and quietly immersive.

At the center is Demuro’s bass playing, elastic and melodic, occasionally recalling the fretless phrasing of Mick Karn’s work with Japan. The instrument acts less as accompaniment and more as a narrative voice, guiding the record’s quieter shifts in mood and momentum. There are subtle touchpoints with the melodic restraint and tonal warmth found in artists like Photay, Resavoir, and Sven Wunder, alongside a nod to the cinematic soul of David Axelrod’s late 60s work.

The title Simulacra points toward reinterpretation rather than imitation. Sounds feel remembered and reshaped, assembled through a tactile home-studio process that balances live performance with electronic production.

Developed between New York and Berlin, Demuro’s approach draws from formal study in New York, time spent working with Swiss pianist Nik Bärtsch, and years immersed in Berlin’s Gifted Culture collective, where his studio practice took shape. Recent collaborations, including experimental electronic work alongside James K and projects connected to Ed Longo’s productions, reflect a background shaped through releases with labels such as SUED, Cosmic Romance Records, and others. The result is an intimate and cinematic debut anchored by bass as its guiding voice.
