Only Good Stuff
Jhelisa - Chasing Sunsets
The enigmatic musical maverick Jhelisa releases her epic new single ‘Chasing Sunsets’, released for the Spring Equinox on Dorado Records. ‘Chasing Sunsets’ is the third record in a series of monumental productions that include ‘Purpose Love’ and ‘Oxygen’, released two years apart, written and composed entirely by Jhelisa and co-produced with longtime collaborator Jono Podmore.
Jhelisa said “Chasing Sunsets is about the pursuit of peace, contentment, and balance. “before the sun goes down” speaks of the often turbulent process that drives you to get to that centerpoint…Whether you’re Chasin money, drugs, sex or good health. This song is a recognition of that pursuit with the hopes for a beautiful ending…Chasin Sunsets before the sun goes down…An 11/8 funky exploration, a mash up of soul jazz and funk…Enjoy the listening!”
Jhelisa, who GQ dubbed ‘Cosmic princess of soul’, has been marching through uncharted musical territories since the mid-1990s when she stunned audiences and critics with both her extraordinary voice and deliciously daring music. Mississippi-born Jhelisa comes from a musical family and is the niece of funk pioneers Vicki Anderson and Bobby Byrd from the James Brown band, and the cousin of Carleen & Bartlett Anderson and sister of Pamela Anderson from Incognito’s ‘100° and Rising’ album.
Across 4 solo albums, beginning with her classic debut ‘Galactica Rush’ also released on seminal London label Dorado Records, Jhelisa has journeyed through soul, trip hop, jazz, avant- garde, gospel and esoteric sonic experimentations. She has been the go-to vocalist for the likes of Bjork, Massive Attack and The Shamen, earning a BPI award for her contributions to their 1993 double-platinum album, Boss Drum, for which she recorded top-ten hit singles L.S.I. and Phorever People, toured with James Brown, The Roots, Herbie Hancock, Sting, and recorded with Chaka Khan and Bryan Ferry. Her thrillingly genre-smashing approach to music subverts her sweet, sensual voice with emotionally raw, spiritually resonant lyrics and a musical sophistication seen nowhere else.
Dorado Records is a pioneering London-based independent label covering Soul, Jazz, Trip Hop, Drum & Bass, and UK Garage. Founded in 1992 by Ollie Buckwell, the label is home to Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Jhelisa, Ebba Åsman, Sunship, D*Note, Natalie Walker, and Outside, among others.
