The Phenomenal Handclap Band - Breaking Glass

The Phenomenal Handclap Band returns to Nublu Records on September 10th with “Breaking Glass, ” the first single from their forthcoming new album and a sharp new chapter in the New York group’s ongoing collision of disco, psych, funk, electronics and live-band energy.

Where some music turns inward, “Breaking Glass” is looking directly at the world outside. Built around the idea of pressure reaching its breaking point, the track takes the sound of shattered glass as both symbol and warning. The moment frustration becomes retaliation. The band describes the song as a narration, incantation, threat, and prophecy all at once. That tension runs straight through the recording. Juliet Swango contributes vocals, percussion and piano alongside Monika Heidemann on vocals, percussion and Prophet-5. Daniel Collás handles drums and Juno-60, Jeremy Kay locks in the electric bass, Peter Matson of Underground System adds guitar, and Moussa Fadera contributes additional percussion and what the band credits as “spiritual advisement”.

Produced and mixed by Collás and mastered by Dustin Alexander, “Breaking Glass” arrives as a two-track digital 45 pairing a full extended version built for the longer ride with a focused radio edit for broadcast, playlists and quicker entry into the track. “Breaking Glass” is the follow-up to Phenomenal Handclap Band’s Nublu debut with 2025’s “We Are Worlds Away, ” recorded in Stockholm with longtime collaborators Fredrik Swahn and Morgan Phalen. The 12” and digital editions of “We Are Worlds Away” are available for anyone who missed it last Fall. “Breaking Glass” doesn’t abandon the dance floor. It gives it something heavier to carry.

“The impetus for the new album is our realization that there seems to be a lot of somewhat self-involved artistic expression and not enough commenting on what’s happening around us. To me, the sound of breaking glass has always been synonymous with riots. It is anger at being provoked to the point of retaliation, the ‘fight’ part of ‘fight or flight’.
