Matt Maltese - As The World Caves In

South Londoner Matt Maltese has revealed his first new single of 2017, the crushingly romantic and sinisterly evocative ‘As The World Caves In’. Taking the idea of an everyday activity - watching TV with a lover - and warping it with a tongue-in-cheek playfulness to rival Jarvis Cocker and Leonard Cohen, ‘As The World Caves In’ imagines Theresa May and Donald Trump having one last night of romance together while they trigger atomic warfare. "Hopefully it comes across romantic, sexy, but also sinister and stupid. It goes without saying but everything's a bit sinister and stupid in 2017,” Matt explained to The FADER.

Produced once again by The Maccabees' Hugo White, ‘As The World Caves In’ follows Matt’s acclaimed 2016 single ‘Vacant In The 21st Century’ - which was championed by BBC 6 Music’s Lauren Laverne and BBC Radio 1’s Phil Taggart, Huw Stephens, and Annie Mac - and will be released via Café Bleu Recordings / Atlantic Records alongside another new track ‘No One Won The War’.

Aged just 20 years old, Matt Maltese is fully embedded in South London’s thriving music circle; hosting his own residency in Brixton last year whilst playing alongside hotly-tipped local acts such as HMLTD, Goat Girl, Fish and Shame. These artists add to an already eclectic collection of names that have influenced Matt Maltese in some way - the heavy tones of Cohen, the dirty wit of Cocker, and the social commentary of fellow Londoners King Krule and Loyle Carner - placing further emphasis on the sense of political unrest that underpins his rich and undeniably accessible songwriting.

Having sold out two shows at London’s Servant Jazz Quarters, and performed for big crowds both at home and abroad last year, Matt is currently on tour with The Walkmen frontman Hamilton Leithauser around Europe and the UK this month. Matt will cap that run with his biggest headline show to date at Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club on Wednesday 29 March before opening for The Maccabees in Birmingham, Glasgow and Newcastle as they prepare for their huge farewell shows this June.
