Gordon Levine - Breakfast EP - Self Release
Gordon Levine returns with Breakfast, a four-track EP that balances classic house sensibilities with subtle left‑field inspiration. The release presents a more structured, flowing approach to house music while leaving room for experimentation, drawing inspiration from progressive house and traditional house forms alike.
The EP features four tracks: the title single “Breakfast”, alongside “Oblivion”, “Slope”, and “Journey.” Together, they form a cohesive arc—energetic yet thoughtful—designed for both the dance floor and deeper listening. The artwork, created by Gordons’s cousin Isabelle Levine, visually reflects the tone and intention of the music, grounding the project in aconsidered aesthetic.
The lead single “Breakfast” opens the EP with momentum and purpose. Inspired by classic house tracks that place the bass line front and center, the track runs at 130 BPM and uses repeating vocal samples built around themes of time and timing. Produced using a combination of Roland hardware and modern plugins, the track delivers a punchy, driving energy that sets the tone for the release.
Following this, “Oblivion” shifts into a more melodic space at 120 BPM. A filtered pluck lead from the Virus TI sits at the heart of the track, supported by warm pad textures created on Roland synthesizer's. The sound palette nods to Detroit house through its pads, while the lead lines draw influence from progressive trance. Vocal samples and horn stabs introduce a more accessible, almost mainstream feel, while percussion and bleep elements from the TR‑1000 maintain rhythmic tension and movement.
The third track is “Journey,” a progressive house track that lives up to its name. A tightly repeating vocal sample, treated in a techno‑influenced style, guides the listener forward, supported by a snappy, driving bass line. Filtered pad textures provide cohesion and depth, while the closing vocal suggests that the true purpose of making music is awareness and expression rather than external success.
Closeing the ep is The fourth track, “Slope,” leans into left‑field and IDM influences. Also set at 120 BPM, it features a dreamy yet dissonant lead crafted on the Virus TI. Vocal elements reference 90s progressive house and trance, while a solo lead inspired by old‑school house ties the track together. A spoken vocal sample reflects on the necessity of effort and perseverance, even in the face of potential loss, adding a reflective layer to the composition.
Breakfast is a focused yet exploratory release, showcasing Gordon Levine’s ability to honour house music’s foundations while pushing gently beyond them.
