From his base in Lisbon, Portugal, Sasha Foam has quietly built a reputation as an artist on the rise – a DJ/producer whose distinctive sonic vision combines a melody-rich approach and undeniably Balearic sensibility with nods to a multitude of classic and contemporary styles, from nu-disco and acid, to psychedelic breaks and 90s downtempo grooves – a sound he regularly explores on his popular monthly radio shows, Search of Esmerelda and Night Lovers (the latter a vehicle for the more song-based side of his musical personality).
Having previously released on lauded San Francisco imprint Dream Chimney (2024’s Ilha Especial and its accompanying remix EP), Sasha is now ready to unleash his NuNorthern Soul label debut, the expansive Memoria EP.
Stretching to six must-check tracks, the set combines chugging, low-tempo dancefloor workouts with more comfortable, spacious and sunset-ready soundscapes, all blessed with the producer’s usual ear-catching melodic motifs, colourful synths, layered instrumentation and inherent sense of atmosphere.
His love of gently undulating TB-303 acid lines comes to the fore on opener ‘Curious’, a locked-in, low-tempo chugger propelled forwards by bubbly synth-bass, gorgeous eyes-closed chords and sturdy, locked-in beats.
The more relaxed and horizontal side of Sasha’s musical personality is extensively explored on the morning sun-ready shuffle of ‘Does Coelhos’ – all dubby bass, memorable keyboard riffs, head-nodding beats, gentle acoustic guitar and undulating electronics – before he reaches for punchier, breakbeat-style programmed drums, spaced-out sounds and gorgeous piano motifs on the deep synth-pop-goes-Balearic-nu-disco bliss of ‘Serpentine’. Emotive and quietly picturesque, it’s a stunning slab of widescreen sonic colour.
‘Dreams’ sees the Portugal-based artist delve more intently into his electronic influences, with fluid and spacey riffs twinkling above gorgeous chords, cascading synth sounds, post-IDM beats and a throbbing, sequenced bassline, while ‘Suave’ fluctuates between yearning, atmospheric ambience, melodious joy and the all-electronic, analogue-rich Balearic nu-disco sounds frequently associated with Canary Islands music-maker Ilya Santana.
To round off a fine first NuNorthern Soul outing, Sasha serves up a dose of sonic ‘Nostalgia’. Built around a shuffling electro break, warm bass and more enveloping, late-afternoon chords, the track is marked out by waves of intergalactic synth sounds, bittersweet chord progressions and, to bring us full circle, rising and falling TB-303 acid lines. Like the rest of the EP, it’s simply stunning.
