Papa Lu - Need Lu

Bay Area born and raised DJ and producer Papa Lu is family to Soul Clap. Now based in Los Angeles, he’s been making his mark in the house scene up and down the West Coast. Papa Lu made his debut on Soul Clap Records in 2025, and for 2026, Lu sharpens his productions for our House of EFUNK label. Produced under the tutelage of Soul Clap’s Charles Levine, the Need Lu EP leans into a harder-edged, peak-time house sound driven by quick vocal cuts, nocturnal synth stabs, rollicking basslines, and sharp, propulsive rhythms.

“All I Need” sets the tone, opening with a soulful vocal, romantic energy, and a bouncing, floor-ready beat. “Special Sound” stretches into a long-form hypnotic groove that steadily evolves across seven minutes, built for heads-down dancefloor immersion. “Favela Funk” layers soul music and Brazilian vocal cut-ups over highly percussive loops and guitar chanks, recreating the Latin-tinged house flavor Lu first introduced us to with his 2025 effort for Soul Clap Records, a collaboration with The Whooligan, titled “Starting To Rise.” “Like Dust I’ll Rise” closes the EP in suspenseful fashion, featuring extended breakdowns, pulsing low end, oscillating synths, and an anthemic message of resurrection — leaving you finishing the EP needing more Papa Lu.
