Mondo Love & Betrayal (LP sampler)

For any collaboration to truly succeed, there has to be a creative meeting point. In the case of Mondo Love & Betrayal, that shared ground was a mutual love of classic 1980s synth-pop and a genuine admiration for each other's musical journeys.

The result is a remarkable debut album.

Released on 11th September via NuNorthern Soul, Mondo Love & Betrayal is a ten-track collection of sophisticated, emotionally rich synth-pop that feels both timeless and refreshingly contemporary. Rather than simply presenting a collection of songs, the album has been crafted as a complete listening experience, flowing naturally from beginning to end with warmth, atmosphere and effortless melodic confidence.

'Mondo Love & Betrayal' brings together two respected Nottingham musicians whose careers have followed very different paths.

Neil 'Nail' Tolliday, best known as one half of Bent alongside Simon Mills, has spent decades building a reputation as one of British electronic music's most accomplished producers, moving effortlessly between downtempo, House and leftfield electronic music. Henry Claude Scott is a guitarist, songwriter, producer and captivating vocalist whose previous work with Torn Sail and Brown Fang showcased a love of organic instrumentation, beautifully crafted songs and expansive, sunset-inspired soundscapes.

The collaboration began when Tolliday invited Scott to sing on a House track. It quickly became something much bigger. Inspired by a shared passion for artists such as Pet Shop Boys, Talk Talk, Japan, New Order, Soft Cell and Depeche Mode, together with legendary producers including Arthur Baker, Martin Hannett, Stephen Hague and John Robie, the pair set out to create the kind of album they both wanted to hear.

Their first writing session produced 'Correspondence', a bittersweet, tongue-in-cheek reflection on relationships in the age of disappearing landlines and mobile phones. It immediately confirmed they had found something special, and over the following eighteen months they quietly assembled an album that perfectly balances classic synth-pop songwriting with modern electronic production.

Throughout the record, Scott's expressive falsetto and emotionally honest lyrics explore love, longing, doubt and betrayal, while Tolliday's beautifully detailed productions combine shimmering melodies, rich analogue textures and subtle references to late-80s and early-90s dance-pop. Listeners may hear echoes of Shep Pettibone remixes, Bernard Sumner guitar lines, Vince Clarke-inspired grooves, Chris Lowe chord progressions and the cinematic melancholy of the Pet Shop Boys, yet the album never feels nostalgic for nostalgia's sake. Instead, it creates a sound that is entirely its own.

Nail explains:

"This album has been a real vibe for both of us to make. Henry's lyrics and passionate vocal delivery brought so much emotion to the music, and I'm very proud of what we've achieved together. The response to the singles has been really encouraging, and we hope people love the album as much as we loved making it. For me, it's among the best things I've ever been involved in."

Elegant, heartfelt and effortlessly melodic, 'Mondo Love & Betrayal' is a debut album that wears its influences proudly while carving out a distinctive identity of its own. It's a confident statement from two seasoned musicians whose combined talents have produced something far greater than the sum of its parts.

The single, 'Whatever Happened To Me', will be released on the 13th of August, followed by the self-titled album, 'Mondo Love & Betrayal', on the 11th of September, via NuNorthern Soul, available as vinyl and digital.
