Edwin Esco, Charles Levine - Little Chef (Double Standard Records)
Edwin Esco, is an OG fixture of the Miami music and art scene, a noted photographer and cinematographer, also sharing his love of disco, house and latin music with the world as DJ Freckles. On the "Little Chef" EP, Edwin’s songwriting was brought to life and produced by his long time friend, Charles Levine (aka 1/2 of Soul Clap) for a 3 track release that bridges Edwin’s Dominican and Miami-Dade roots with deep influences of New York City 80's downtown disco and punk funk - this EP sounds like it could come straight from ZE Records or Emergency Records in 1982 - if these labels were still doing it today. Instead, it's the first release from the newly revived Double Standard Records led by Gadi Mizrahi (of Wolf + Lamb), who under the Crew Love banner supported Edwin and Charles and signed this wild, experimental and loveable EP.
"Little Chef" is an electro punk affair with slashing guitars and New wave synth pads as the platform for Edwin's wailing proclamations of world domination and self reflection as "the muchacho" of the moment… at least in Cindy Crawfords eyes.
"The Cutest Butt In The World" is a funky booty shaker led by Charles Levine's thick and bubbling bass line, 80s talk boxes, futuristic synths and Edwin's adept Spanglish rap. This song tells the story of a night out at Miami’s infamous Electric Pickle, the foundational night club formerly in Wynwood where so much musical history was made.
"Tabaquito" (which is Spanish slang for "Joint") places Edwin and his layered soulful falsetto vocals on to a Bootsy Collins type of slow burning funk ballad, replete with that Bootsy style signature bass line, cosmic synths, R&B pianos, and a heartbeat rhythm. The story here is told from the perspective of a young enthusiasts first joint with a mischievous warning sung by the joint itself… you’re gonna love me but it’s gonna cost you!
