Rony Seikaly drops three-tracker ‘Practice’ on his own STRIDE imprint, out June 21st.
With the lead track ‘Practice’, former NBA basketball star Seikaly samples Allen Iverson’s famously insistent ‘we talking about practice’ press conference rant throughout. The disgruntled player’s ready-made rap punctuates a strong, assertive beat and funky riffs which build to the breakdown, after which a more melodic tune slides in to add another clear thread the listener is induced to follow, entranced. Listen too for basketball sound effects and net swishings incorporated into the track.
‘Aya’ skilfully balances light and shade, as a knife-sharpening riff with deep melancholic chords shadows a lively beat and jangling chimes, becoming a little woozy in the middle as bright and dark swirl together. An attention-grabbing and -holding track, while your feet want to strut down a city street between shady awnings and patches of blazing sun.
‘Keep On’ has a building beat which carries you up with it before a slinky bass starts messing with its simple certainty. Tinkling percussion and Motown-like vocal samples provide melody. A lot happening for listeners and dancers alike.
Watch out for Rony’s upcoming documentary with Close Up 360, delving into his story from being born in Beirut, growing up in Athens in a time of unrest, to his impact on professional basketball and his current career as a DJ and producer. Catch him playing in Ibiza at B! Crazy @ HEART on June 14th, Nomade Dubai on June 21st, The Garten Beirut on June 29th and Blue Marlin Mykonos on July 5th.
