Over the last six months, Mondo Love & Betrayal have delivered a string of impactful, ear-catching singles offering tantalising glimpses of the nostalgic and colourful synth-pop sound of their forthcoming, self-titled debut album. The wait for that set, which is due to land in stores on September 11, is almost over, but before then the duo of Henry Claude Scott and Neil ‘Nail’ Tolliday are providing one more glimpse into their vibrant and emotive sound world.
‘Whatever Happened To Me’ is another retro-futurist gem rooted in the pair’s combined love of 1980s synth-pop greats and he pulsating electronic dance sound of the pre-house period. Described by Scott as “the most autobiographical song on the album”, with lyrics that are “weirder and more avoidant” than the album’s other reflective tracks, ‘Whatever Happened To Me’ once more features a bold, memorable chorus that will worm its’ way into your subconscious and stay there for weeks.
Musically, ‘Whatever Happened To Me’ is the album’s most throbbing moment – all chugging, sequenced bass, pulsing stabs, dreamy chords, chiming melodies and alien electronics. It once more showcases Tolliday’s canny knack of conjuring up music that’s celebratory but tinged with melancholia – a sound that Scott likens to “an imaginary world in the sky where everything looks like Pet Shop Boys’ ‘Go West’ music video and cartoon animals join in on the last chorus”.
It’s certainly a vivid image, and one fully in keeping with the expansive, kaleidoscopic and timeless sound Mondo Love & Betrayal have been crafting since first joining forces in the studio to lay down debut single ‘Correspondence’. The musical alchemy, the product of Bent member Tolliday’s production skills and Torn Sail and Brown Fang member Scott’s superb songwriting and emotive vocal delivery, is also evident on subsequent singles ‘Your Latest’, ‘Beyond The Rainy City’ and ‘Seppuku’.
In September, the full collaborative sonic vision of Tolliday and Scott will be unleashed on the public. We guarantee it will be worth the wait.
