OY - Free Space?

“Music inspired by powerful messages—messages that are written on walls yet have the potential to bring them down.” With “Free Space?,” the Berlin-based duo OY releases the first single from their forthcoming concept album “Messages From Walls” (out February 2027) and consistently evolves their distinctive, genre-bending sound.

The term “Afrokraut,” which circulated in the wake of the band’s earlier releases, could also describe this song quite aptly. Minimalist yet multi-layered, “Free Space?” takes up one of the many questions that trouble our society and weaves them into basslines and patterns that transport us away from reality for over five minutes. The vocals are arrayed like a repetitive mantra, leaving room for reflection—who actually still knows, sees, and finds spaces of freedom today?

Like the entire upcoming album, the song is based on photos of street poetry, street art, and sociopolitical messages collected by OY while on tour in various European cities. The message “Free Space?”—found in Venice’s alleyways—was transformed by singer/keyboardist Joy Frempong and producer/drummer Melodydreamer on the spot in their mobile jam studio. Listening to this pre-release track suggests that OY have remained true to their credo on their upcoming album: that the best way to break down stereotypes is by dancing them away.
